Matthew 27

Matthew 27 - Jesus Faces His Trial and Crucifixion

All the head priests and elders from the whole denomination. They wanted to put an end to Jesus for teaching truth. However, only the Roman government had the authority to pronounce you to death at this time.

When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: All the head priests and elders from the whole denomination. They wanted to put an end to Jesus for teaching truth. However, only the Roman government had the authority to pronounce you to death at this time.

And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Delivered to the roman governor. (The Messiah betrayed by His own people).

Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Judas repented and wanted to back out of the deal. He did not think that it would come down to killing Christ. At this point, Judas was very dangerous to Pilate and the chief priests. They knew that Judas might reveal their plot to kill Jesus to the people.

Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. They told Judas that was his problem and that they did not need him anymore.

And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. Judas did not hang himself, he had help from others. (Acts 1:16-18). Do not judge Judas; Remember that he repented for what he had done. Judas had no choice, it was written that he would betray Jesus by David in the old testament. (Psalm 41:9, 55:12-13).

And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. It was blood money, and unlawful to put it in the temple treasury.

And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. They took the money and bought a certain field where the clay was used by potters, and made it into a cemetery for foreigners who died in Jerusalem.

Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. That is why the cemetery is still called "The Field of Blood."

Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; Thirty pieces of silver was also the going price for a slave at the time.

And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me. Jeremiah may have said it, but it is written in (Zechariah 11:12-13).

And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. You said it, "Jesus replied." (Jesus made no declaration here).

And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. They made many accusations against Him, but Jesus remained silent. Again, it is written. (Isaiah 53:7).

Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? "Don't you hear that they are talking about all these charges against you?"

And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. But, Jesus said nothing, much to the governor's surprise. Pilate considered religion a superstition, so it wasn't that big of a deal to him. But, he couldn't figure out why the Jews had a problem with Jesus, even Pilate could find no fault with Him.

Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would. Pilate was trying to pacify the elders and the people. The governors custom was to release one Jewish prisoner each year during Passover celebration.

And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. Barabbas was pretty well known. "He was a very bad man." (Mark 15:7, John 18:40).

Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? The people were given a choice on who to release. Well, not really, you know their was someone behind it. "It was Satan and the kenites enticing the people."

For he knew that for envy they had delivered him. Delivered up for jealousy because of His popularity with the people.

When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. Pilate's wife sent him a message: "Leave that good man alone, because she had a terrible nightmare concerning Him the night before."

But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. The kenites (sons of Cain), enticed by Satan, were the ones doing the dirty work here and stirred up the crowds against Jesus.

The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. The crowds picked Barabbas to save. Barabbas (meaning, Son of the father), but which father? He was a son of the devil!

Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. They were furious, and called on Christ to be crucified. (Again, enticed by Satan). That sleazy serpent that is behind all evil!

And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. Pilate again demanded. What has this man done wrong? But again they spoke with authority, "Let Him be crucified." (You can bet that these were also men of authority in the religious community).

When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Pilate could not sway them to release Jesus, so he washed his hands of it. It was the church who sentenced Jesus to death. Nice church, and I bet they looked so holy. How is your church doing?

Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. This is a very controversial scripture verse. We should never blame our brother Judah for this heinous crime. (They are God's chosen people). It was more likely the kenites (enticed by Satan), in the crowd that wanted Jesus crucified, and the Romans were the one's who crucified Him. However, because of this, a terrible event would come upon the Jews with the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD by the Romans.

Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. After Pilate was pleading for Jesus, he had to release Barabbas because the crowds demanded it. He ordered Jesus to be flogged and gave him to the roman soldiers to take Him away and be crucified. (To be flogged was a severe punishment, the flesh being generally cut by the whips used for this purpose).

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. Taken to the Roman soldiers.

And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. Mocking Jesus in the robe as "king of the Jews." Trying to shame Him and the people.

And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! They placed that crown of thorns on His head and knelt before Him in mockery.

And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. They spit at Him and were beating the crown of thorns they placed on His head with a stick.

And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him. No pity was given to Him. After beating and mocking Jesus, He was led away to be crucified.

And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. Simon, a Christian man who was from Cyrene, was forced to carry Jesus' cross. (This was a cross beam, not the entire cross).

And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, Golgotha, an Aramaic word meaning "the skull." The Latin is (Calvaria), "a skull," Hence English Calvary. Near the hill "Moriah," where Abraham carried Isaac up to be sacrificed. (Genesis 22:1-2).

They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. Written in (Psalm 69:20-28), they even gave Him (gall) and vinegar to drink. Gall is from the poppy seed plant and vinegar was the poor mans wine. Trying to drug Jesus up a little, maybe to kill the pain. "Jesus would not drink it."

And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. The Roman soldiers cast lots for His clothing. Written in (Psalms 22:18), 1,000 years before the crucifixion.

And sitting down they watched him there; They sat around and watched Him as He hung to die.

And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Common practice of the Romans to put up a sign to show what the man was crucified for. (John 19:19-22).

Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. The two malefactors.

And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, People passing hurled abuse, shaking their heads at Him.

And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Mockery and slamming Jesus; if you are the Son of God, come down off the cross and save yourself. This "Temple" we are speaking about here is "Christ" and the many member body of Christ that He started to build after the crucifixion. The "Temple of Christ" would rise again after three days. "They didn't get it."

Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, Even the chief priests and elders mocked Him.

He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. It is written that these words would come from the enemies mouth. (Psalms 22:7-8). Again, written 1,000 years before the crucifixion. Jesus could have saved Himself, but because He didn't, we are the ones who would be saved. (John 12:47).

He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. All the chief priests and religious leaders just having a field day mocking Jesus. It was God's will for Him to be crucified and would not save Him. Jesus had to fulfill what He came to do. "Die for the sins of the world." (John 3:16-17, 5:17-25).

The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. Even the malefactors mocked Jesus as they hung there beside Him. (Later one of them would believe on Him).

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. From 12:00 noon till three o'clock, the whole earth was covered in darkness.

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Christ was not crying for help, and God did not forsake Him. Note that Jesus never called the Heavenly Father God, He always called Him Father. He was quoting from (Psalms 22:1).

Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. Elias is the Greek for Elijah. Many of them misunderstood and thought that Jesus was calling on Elijah to save Him. Again, Christ was quoting from a Psalm of David. (Psalm 22). Written 1,000 years before this event took place.

And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. In (Matthew 27:34), Jesus was offered (Gall), drugs mixed with poor mans wine and He refused it. Here He is given just poor mans wine from a soldier to quench His thirst. (John19:29-30).

The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. Saying to each other, lets see if Elijah comes and saves Him.

Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.  Christ bowed His head and gave up the Spirit. (John 19:30). Ghost is a bad translation, and should be translated as Spirit.

And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; The curtain secluding the Holiest place in the Temple was split apart from top to bottom as the earth shook. Meaning that Christ had paid the price, and there was no more need for sacrifices. Christ was the sacrifice for one in all times. "He died for us." Why did He come in the flesh? (Hebrews 2:12-15), that through His death, He would destroy the one who had the power of death, that is, the devil! (Giving us a chance to come out of bondage under the devil).

And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, Many godly men and women who had died came back to life again. A one time event.

And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Again, this was a one time event to document that Christ had defeated death. (John 5:19-47).

Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. Even the unbelievers were frightened and shocked at what had happened and made them believers.

And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: The woman remained as did John, but the others all scattered.

Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children. Again, the women remained to care for Him.

When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: This was Joseph of Arimathea "the tin man" Mary's uncle.

He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. Joseph was the "kinsman redeemer." This was the law at this time.

And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, Joseph took care of the body.

And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. Written in (Isaiah 53:9), 600 years before the crucifixion.

And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre. Both Mary's sitting nearby watching.

Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, They wanted to cover their tracks for what they have done.

Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. They said to Pilate, that liar said that after three days, He would come back to life again.

Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. They wanted watch guards on the tomb, to prevent His disciples from coming and stealing the body away.

Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. Pilate told them to use their own temple police to guard the tomb.

So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. So they sealed the stone and posted guards to protect it from intrusion. (No one could claim that the body was stolen).

Keep the faith,
